Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most asked questions we receive.

Don’t see what you need? No problem! Contact us and we’ll be happy to answer all of your questions.

Yes, as per Ontario Fire Codes, testing of all systems is required to be performed before the day of the last annual inspection.
Yes, all technicians are required to be properly licensed for the fire alarm and sprinkler systems they are testing or repairing.

Non-licensed maintenance personnel may test single smoke alarms or CO’s as long as they are not interconnected.

A licensed electrician is required when replacing or installing 120vac smoke alarms.

The Ontario Fire Code states that annual maintenance reports must be kept on file for a period of two years and verification reports must be kept for the life of the system.

A professional fire alarm system inspection is critical to ensure that the entirety of the system is in proper working order.

A professional will be familiar with local requirements for fire alarm systems and can help you make sure your building remains in compliance.

Having a fire alarm inspection and properly working system can mean the difference between life and death, and when it comes to life safety, it’s always best to leave it up to the professionals.

Local jurisdictions may have specific guidelines outlining how often a test and fire alarm system service should occur.

You can plan for at least an annual test for most components, though some components require semi-annual testing.

Fire alarm system tests are crucial not only to stay in compliance with local authorities, but to ensure that your system will function properly when it’s needed.

Often you hear people using the terms smoke alarms and smoke detectors interchangeably; however, there is a difference between the two.

What’s the difference?

A smoke alarm is an all-in-one, self-contained device, with a detector, which senses the products of combustion (smoke) and sounds an audible, and sometimes visual warning or alarm. Smoke alarms are widely used in residential settings.

Put simply, a smoke alarm detects smoke and sounds an alarm.

A smoke detector is strictly a sensing device only, which senses the products of combustion (smoke) and sends a signal to a building’s fire alarm system to activate an audible, and sometimes visual warning or alarm.

Smoke detectors must be connected to a building’s fire alarm system and are NOT a stand-alone unit.

Put simply, a smoke detector senses smoke only and must be connected to a fire alarm system control panel.

Smoke detectors are a detection device only – not an alarm.

As long as you follow our recommendations and guidance, which are always based on compliance with provincial fire safety regulations and standards, there is no reason why you would not pass an inspection.

Unfortunately, each situation is different and it would be impossible to offer pricing without assessing your situation and its unique needs.
